The Boeing Store recently released the third set in the exclusive Centennial Heritage Collection that honors 24 historical aircraft and spacecraft from the companies that make up the Boeing we know today. It includes the Douglas DC-3, which made air travel popular and airline profits possible. The first DC-3 built was the Douglas Sleeper Transport, also known as Skysleepers by airline customers. It was the height of luxury. The Douglas DC-3 is universally recognized as the greatest airplane of its time. Learn more about the Douglas DC-3.
The collection also features the North American X-15, an airplane designed to conduct research experiments during actual flight conditions beyond the earth’s atmosphere. The X-15 program obtained knowledge of aerodynamic heating, reentry conditions, acceleration and deceleration forces, and reactions of man to weightlessness. Learn more about the North American X-15.
And last in this set is the award winning McDonnell Douglas C-17 Globemaster III, a high-wing, four-engine, T-tailed aircraft with a rear loading ramp. The United States Air Force requested a larger transport that could be refueled in-flight and use rough forward fields allowing it to fly anywhere in the world. McDonnell Douglas built the Douglas C-17 Globemaster III and met or exceeded all Air Force design specifications. Learn more about the C-17 Globemaster III.
